Statehood for Alaska and Hawaii

Alaska and Hawaii became states in 1959, completing the current American nation.


The St. Lawrence Seaway

The Seaway is a system of canals completed in 1959 that link the Great Lakes of the heartland with the Atlantic Ocean .


Enrolled additional 10 million people into Social Security

Dwight Eisenhower was the principal force behind the greatest single expansion of Social Security beneficiaries in the history of the program. He led the legislative drive to add over ten million Americans to the system.


Support for Civil Rights

Eisenhower fought for and passed the first civil rights bill in eighty years, used executive powers to desegregate Washington, DC and the Armed Forces, and sent federal troops to Little Rock, Arkansas to ensure integration in schools.


National Interstate Highway System

The national highway system changed the face of America and brought it into the modern age.


NASA – National Aeronautics and Space Administration

Eisenhower created NASA as a civilian agency.


National Defense Education Bill

This bill provided emergency federal aid to state and local education systems, especially in science, math, and languages. It signaled the birth of modern federal aid to education.


Department of Health, Education, and Welfare

The creation of the Department of Health, Education and Welfare elevated these social services to cabinet-level status, and laid the foundation for the modern Department of Education and the Department of Health and Human Services.


Inspiration to American People

Eisenhower instilled confidence during one of the most dangerous periods of the Cold War.


Responsible Fiscal & Financial Policies

Eisenhower fought for sound financial policies and against federal waste. His administration saw three years of balanced budgets and control of a growing national debt.


Led U.S. away from Isolationism

One of the major reasons Eisenhower ran for president was to keep America from turning back to isolationism and leaving the world to the Soviets at the end of World War II. He made America into an international superpower to keep peace in the world.
