Chapter 1: Developing a spirit of teamwork

I have just been visited by Reverend Youngdahl,1 who is a brother of Federal Judge Youngdahl.2 The Judge, as you know, used to be Governor of Minnesota.

Reverend Youngdahl says that there will probably soon occur, in Minnesota, a vacancy in the Circuit Court of Appeals. He thinks that his brother would be the best qualified appointee we could find.3

I merely promised Reverend Youngdahl to pass the above on to you.

1 Reuben K. L. Youngdahl (Augustana Theological Seminary 1934), a Lutheran pastor and civic leader in Minneapolis since 1938, recently had returned from travels in Western Europe, North Africa, and India. Republican Congressman Walter Judd of Minnesota, a former Taft supporter, had requested the 3:30 p.m. White House appointment.

2 Luther W. Youngdahl (LL.B. Minneapolis College of Law 1922) had served as a Minneapolis city attorney and Minnesota supreme court judge until winning the first of three terms as governor in 1947. In 1951 Truman named him judge of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, where, in May of the following year, he played a prominent part in turning aside the government's disloyalty case against Johns Hopkins University professor Owen Lattimore (for background see Galambos, NATO and the Campaign of 1952, no. 921).

3 Youngdahl would remain on the federal court for the District of Columbia until his death in 1978.
