Chapter 132: Asia: A "boiling kettle of possible trouble"

Herewith a description of a project in which the sponsors want my personal endorsement.1 The covering letter and the brochure taken together give a rather good idea of what is intended.

Frankly, I am disposed to go along with the idea; it looks to me like a very fine thing for the United States. However, before we do anything, I think we should have the opinion both of the State Department and the Department of H.E.W.2

When the brochure has served its purpose, I am to return it to Mr. James Black, whose property it is.3

1 A typed notation at the bottom of this memorandum reads: "Request is for President to lend endorsement to Pius XII Memorial Library, which is to be built on campus of St. Louis University. Manuscripts of Vatican Library are to be micro filmed and placed in library."

2 Adams would check with the Departments of State and HEW, which would both approve Eisenhower's endorsement of the library (see the President's daily appointments, and New York Times, Dec. 8, 12, 1954). The library would be dedicated on November 22, 1959 (New York Times, Aug. 16, 1957, Nov. 23, 1959).

3 Black had delivered the material to the White House earlier this day. He would meet with Eisenhower again on December 7 (see the President's daily appointments).
