Chapter 17: "Stern edicts" from the Doctors

Dear Mr. Probasco: Again I want to assure you, and through you, the members of the Farm Bureau Cooperative Association, Inc., of Ohio, of my appreciation of your kindness in presenting to me such a fine tractor.1 It will be an invaluable asset in our farming operations, and I am truly grateful.

It was a great pleasure to meet you--and, despite the cold, [I] enjoyed our brief talk about some of my farm problems. And, of course, I was delighted to have the opportunity to show off my tiny herd of Angus.

With best wishes and renewed thanks, Sincerely

1 Probasco was executive vice-president of the Farm Bureau Cooperative Association, Inc., of Ohio. Earlier this same day, Probasco and representatives of the the Indiana Farm Bureau Cooperative Association, Inc., and the Pennsylvania Farm Bureau Cooperative Association had given a Black Hawk tractor to Eisenhower for use on his farm. In October Presidential Secretary Ann Whitman had suggested that, in view of the President's illness, the group might consider presenting the tractor to Eisenhower's farm manager, General Arthur Nevins. They had, however, preferred to wait until Eisenhower was well enough for a personal presentation (see Throckmorton to Whitman, Nov. 23, 1955, AWF/Gettysburg; see also Briggs to Eisenhower, Aug. 5, 1955, Eisenhower to Briggs, Aug. 11, 1955, Whitman to Adams [Oct. 11, 1955], Whitman to Briggs, Oct. 11, 1955, and Briggs to Whitman, Oct. 18, 1955, all in ibid.).
