Dear Harry: Thank you very much for your interesting report. Of course, I never had any doubt that our new Italian Ambassador would get started on her work with the good will of everyone who knows her, on both sides of the water. Likewise, I have no doubt as to the effectiveness of the official performance she will turn in.1

Please convey to her warm greetings from Mamie and me--and, as always, with personal regard for your good self, Sincerely

1 In a letter of April 27 (AWF/A) Luce had reported on his wife's activities as newly appointed ambassador to Italy (for background on Ambassador Clare Boothe Luce see no. 51). Luce told of their busy schedule of farewell dinners in the United States before departure for Italy on April 14 aboard the Italian Line flagship Andrea Doria. "The Embassy people here seemed to be quite apprehensive about Clare's arrival and the reception at Naples," he wrote, "and one can sympathize with them because they are not accustomed to having a `personality' as Ambassador." Mrs. Luce would present her credentials to Italian President Luigi Einaudi in Rome on May 4 (New York Times, Apr. 4, 11, 13, 15, 23, May 5, 1953).
