Part IX: "Concerning my political intentions"; December 1955 to April 1956
Chapter 18: On "an almost normal schedule"

Dear Betsy and Jock: I have been very remiss in my failure to write you long ago to thank you for the lovely luncheon and afternoon at your house, as well as for the many nice things you brought over to Milestone to add to the enjoyment of all of us.1 My only excuse is that I have had a few things on my mind, and although possibly most of them were of importance only to myself, I assure you that others have had a wider significance.2

Of course I must add a word of congratulations on Jock's improvement as a bridge player, which is indeed notable. This I say regardless of the fact that the score board would seem to indicate that Bill was really a Babe Ruth playing against sandlot players.3 But the man revoked three times! There is simply no justice, at least in a bridge game.

Anyway, again my grateful thanks, in which Mamie joins, and please try to hold on tentatively to some of those spring weekends so that when the flowers begin to come out in Gettysburg, we may all have a reunion.

With affectionate regard, As ever

P.S. Thanks for the wonderful sausage. It is the best we have tasted since the last batch you gave us.

P.S. II Mamie says not to forget to send us the information on how to grow that so good "caviar" in your garden.

P.S. III (March 1, 1956). And thank you both for your telephone call after the show last evening, and for your telegram received this morning.4

1 On February 19 the Eisenhowers had visited Greenwood, Jock and Betsey Whitney's Thomasville, Georgia, estate. For background on Treasury Secretary Humphrey's nearby Milestone Plantation see no. 1756.

2 Later this same day the President would announce his candidacy in the 1956 election (see no. 1766).

3 This was mutual friend William E. Robinson (for further information about the bridge match see no. 1758).

4 The telegram is in AWF/A.
