Chapter 1: Developing a spirit of teamwork

Dear Stanley:1 The rather startling suggestion in your letter of the ninth will receive--I promise--serious consideration.2 Thanks for sending it along.

I enjoyed seeing you.3 When you come back to Washington, be sure to drop in. Sincerely

1 Senior editor at Reader's Digest and a Methodist lay leader, High had served as one of Eisenhower's speechwriters during the presidential campaign (Galambos, Columbia University; and Galambos, NATO and the Campaign of 1952, nos. 858 and 922).

2 "Because of the desirability of strengthening the feeling and hope that now, at long last, we can begin to give first thought to the things that unite, rather than the things which divide us, and thus go forward together," High had written the President (AWF/N), "I should like to suggest that, prior to departing on his world tour, Adlai Stevenson be invited to the White House and that he be asked to make a report to you of his findings. If precedent is required, there is one in Roosevelt's 1942 approval of Wendell Willkie's `One World' tour." For Stevenson's White House visit see no. 42.

3 High thanked Eisenhower for the "opportunity to talk" on Friday, but the President's appointment book contains no mention of a meeting between the two on February 6.
