Part I: Charting a New Course; January 1953 to April 1953
Chapter 1: Developing a spirit of teamwork

Dear Amon:1 It is a coincidence that your letter of the fourteenth arrived the day before I have an appointment with Oswald Ryan. I am glad to have your opinion of him.2

Now about coming to Fort Worth May first! Mamie and I would both like to make the trip, but in this present experience I have found that many of the things we most want to do can't be done because other people will be hurt, or will expect similar treatment, or something of the kind. However, let me think the matter over for a little while--though I am very much afraid the answer will have to be "No."3

You are kind, as always, to think of sending us the steaks from the champion steer.4 I've found a little private kitchen on the third floor--where I firmly intend to indulge again, my yen for occasional cooking.

With warm regard, Sincerely

1 See no. 10. Ann Whitman, Eisenhower's personal secretary, may have drafted this letter for the President (see the draft copy in WHCF/PPF 203).

2 Ryan (A.B. Harvard 1911) had been a member of the Civil Aeronautics Board since 1938 and chairman since 1952. Before leaving office, President Truman had named Ryan to another term as chairman of the board (New York Times, Jan. 1, 1953). Carter had praised Ryan as "thoroughly honest and competent" and had recommended that Eisenhower retain him as chairman (Carter to Eisenhower, Feb. 14, 1953, WHCF/PPF 203). Ryan would meet with Eisenhower the following morning. For developments see nos. 585 and 1217.

3 Carter had asked Eisenhower to be present at the dedication of the Fort Worth Greater International Airport. "We are making great preparations for the opening," Carter wrote, "and will have a lot of your good friends from all over the country present for the occasion" (Carter to Eisenhower, Feb. 14, 1953, WHCF/PPF 203). Eisenhower would not attend the ceremony.

4 Having puchased the grand champion steer at the Southeastern Exposition and Fat Stock Show, Carter had told the President that he would be sending him "some blue ribbon meat."
