Dear Bill:1 Last night Mamie, Min2 and I at last had an evening all to ourselves and we got to talking about you. This reminded us that we have not seen you since we came down here to Washington; moreover, it has been some ten days or two weeks since we had a report on the progress you are making under your doctor. How are you anyway?
If our present plans are not kicked into a cocked hat, Mamie and I will get away from here on Thursday afternoon to spend Friday, Saturday and Sunday morning in Augusta. We will be back Sunday afternoon. It may seem to you that we are very quickly feeling the need of a couple of days vacation--but at times it seems like we have been here for a year. The instant I started making my plans to go, I began to hear rumblings of putting in switchboards, offices and so on down at the club. I decided that if I had to do all that I might as well stay here. But I am still desperately hoping to get away from business conferences and from the telephone for a matter of seventy-two hours.
Mamie is working just as hard as I do--although along a somewhat different line. She receives women's and children's groups each day, sometimes up to three or four in the course of one day. She has a big correspondence and has not yet engaged a social secretary. This last I think she must do because when the fall social season comes around we will really need someone to look after the invitations and all the rest of the things that will pile in on her.3 I doubt if she will get a chance to write to you today since I told her at the house this morning that I would do so. However, she sends her love, as does Min.
Remember us to Steve,4 and of course all the best to you. Sincerely
P.S. We are still looking forward to that visit of yours.
