Dear Arthur: I have put the matter of the postage stamp to commemorate the Bicentennial of Columbia University into Mr. Summerfield's hands.1 I am hopeful that the Post Office Department will see fit to permit such an issue. While the official mill grinds slowly, I shall nevertheless follow the matter up and let you know the reaction as soon as possible.2

With all good wishes, Sincerely

1 On the Bicentennial see no. 48. This same day in a memorandum to Postmaster General Arthur E. Summerfield (AWF/A) Eisenhower endorsed Sulzberger's request. "Because of my former relationship with Columbia," the President wrote, "I should very much like to see the commemorative stamp issued. On the other hand, I would quite understand if you feel this would be out of line."

2 On March 10 Eisenhower would write the chairman of the university board of trustees that Summerfield had approved the special stamp (ibid.).
