Part I: Charting a New Course; January 1953 to April 1953
Chapter 1: Developing a spirit of teamwork

My first day at President's Desk.1 Plenty of worries and difficult problems. But such has been my portion for a long time--the result is that this just seems (today) like a continuation of all I've been doing since July '412--even before that!

1 For background on Eisenhower's inauguration the day before as thirty-fourth president of the United States see nos. 1020 and 1056-57 in The Papers of Dwight David Eisenhower (Baltimore, 1970-), vol. XIII, NATO and the Campaign of 1952, ed. Louis Galambos (1989), hereafter cited as Galambos, NATO and the Campaign of 1952; New York Times, January 21, 1953; and Stephen E. Ambrose, Eisenhower, vol. II, The President (New York, 1984), pp. 41-43. Eisenhower discussed his feelings on entering office in Mandate for Change, 1953-1956 (Garden City, N.Y., 1963), pp. 107-8.

2 In July 1941, as a recently promoted colonel, Eisenhower had begun a tour of duty as Chief of Staff, Third Army, at Fort Sam Houston, Texas (Stephen E. Ambrose, Eisenhower, vol. I, Soldier, General of the Army, President Elect [New York, 1983], p. 127).
