Part V: Maintaining "a united defense"; April 1954 to August 1954
Chapter 131: The "men in the Kremlin are not to be trusted"

Dear Mrs. Fagg: Thank you for your letter of the twenty-third.1 I am always truly appreciative of an honest expression of opinions, particularly since of late I find it is a commoditiy that is very rare indeed. I can only say that while the political facts of life sometimes bewilder and even sadden me, I do earnestly attempt to follow my own conscience and conceptions of right in what to do.

In the instance to which you refer, circumstances which were originally unknown to me forced a decision that was unpalatable--but some day when I get a chance to tell you about it you will understand that I did not sacrifice principle.

I need scarcely assure you that I have the greatest respect and admiration for your father. It is a privilege to know a man of his courage and statesmanship.

With best wishes, and again my thanks for writing. Sincerely

1 Mrs. Fagg of Austin, Texas, had written on August 23 to protest the recent withdrawal of her father's name as an alternate delegate to the United Nations (same file as document). Her father, Wright F. Morrow, a Houston lawyer and a Democratic National Committeeman from Texas, had been nominated by the President on July 26 (see New York Times, July 27, 1954). She said that she nevertheless continued to admire Eisenhower and that she hoped he would have a "more cooperative Congress next year." For background see no. 1029.
