Chapter 132: Asia: A "boiling kettle of possible trouble"

Dear Cliff: I am sorry I didn't see you the night of the Citizens' dinner, which to my way of thinking was an outstanding success and was certainly a truly enjoyable evening.1 Now I understand that you have departed for Augusta with your "politicking" done.2 Perhaps, if you stop off here on your way back to New York, I shall see you before you get this letter.3

Words are totally inadequate to tell you how much I appreciate your behind-the-scenes guidance not only of the Thursday night dinner, but of the entire program of activities of the Citizens' group. Whatever the outcome next Tuesday, I am confident that the work of the Citizens' for Eisenhower Congressional Committee will serve as an inspiration and guide to Republican and Independent organizations of the future. Certainly I can say in confidence that from the standpoint of the candidates supported, the quality of the literature and other promotional material, the imagination displayed and the enthusiasm engendered by the volunteers, my admiration and respect has been aroused. For much of this I know you are responsible, financially and otherwise. I hope the results will justify all the hard work you have put into the campaign; if not, I suppose we shall have to be content with the knowledge of a job well done.4

My warm thanks to you, as always. As ever
