The Papers of Dwight David Eisenhower, Volume XVI - The Presidency: The Middle Way
Part VII: "Nothing could be worse than global war"; January 1955 to May 1955
Chapter 14: "We must show no lack of firmness"

Dear Tom: I realize that you are going to do nothing on the putting green until fall, but this is just to notify you that we have to go through the whole exercise of locating it once again.1 Mrs. Ike says that the green simply must be some place where she can sit on the porch and watch us practice. This means we will have to put it somewhere east of the house.2

Anyway I enjoyed having you with me for the afternoon.

With warm regard, As ever

1 Retired Air Force Colonel Belshe was Eisenhower's frequent golfing partner at Burning Tree Country Club where he was greens chairman (Roach, Chief, Interpretation and Visitor Services, United States Department of the Interior, Feb. 22, 1993, EP). On February 25 Belshe had visited the Eisenhowers' farm to advise on the location of a putting green. (For background see no. 857.)

2 The green, a gift from the Professional Golfers' Association of America, would be installed in early November (see Harry L. Moffitt to Eisenhower, Apr. 11, 1955; Eisenhower to Harry L. Moffitt, Apr. 16, 1955; and Harry L. Moffitt to Thomas M. Belshe, Feb. 29, 1956, all in AWF/Gettysburg; New York Times, Nov. 8, 1955; see also Nevins, Five-Star Farmer, p. 111).
