Dear Art: I spoke to Admiral Strauss about servicing the two heifers of mine that should be ready some time this summer.1 He will be delighted to do this for us and will send his own truck to transport the two heifers to his farm. One of these is Blackcap Bessie 13th of TT. Since she was calved in March, 1954, she should be ready for breeding any time after the middle of June, '55. The other one, Whitney Jilt 10th, should have her first calf on the 8th of next month and should be ready for breeding also about the middle of June. In any event, Admiral Strauss will keep them both at his farm until assured that both are safely with calf and then return them to us.2
As I understand it, this plan will take care of any of the needs of my cattle for this year. Likewise, it is my understanding that George and Billy will be breeding all of their stock through the current year to Prince 105 TT. This means that we will not have any need for our own herd bull until 1956.3
I told Mr. Berkey about the new dogwoods that are coming to the farm and explained to him that you know where they are to be planted.4
It occurs to me that there might be some wrecking of buildings or excavating going on around Gettysburg where the builder might be looking for a place to dump dirt and old stone and brick. If so he might--for a nominal haulage fee, bring it out as far as the road that you want to fill up or to one of the corrals where additional material should be most useful.
If such a thing develops, it would be most fortunate.5
Give my love to Ann, and all the best to yourself. As ever
