Chapter 15: Searching "for an honorable peace"

Dear Allan: You and I have often talked about the possibility that you might come over to Augusta some time while I was there and play a couple of rounds with me.1

Presently I am planning to spend a little time there in mid-April, to include the weekend of the 16th and 17th. Would it be possible for you to come in some time on Friday, or at least Saturday, so that we could play Saturday afternoon and Sunday?2

It is a delightful spot, and if Mrs. Shivers would like to accompany you, of course we would be more than pleased.3 There are always quarters of the club in which you both could be quite comfortable, and certainly we would be very happy to have you as our guests.

I have been plagued by a bursitis in my right shoulder which has shown as yet no signs of yielding to treatment.4 My own golf may not be equal to giving you a good game, even with a reasonable handicap; but we will always have players there who will be able to battle it out with you.

The period indicated is probably the only time in which I will have an opportunity to go down there this spring. However, if that weekend is inconvenient for you, we will start laying our plans for next fall.

Please convey my warm greetings to Marialice, and, as always, the best to yourself. Sincerely

1 Texas Governor Allan Shivers had told Eisenhower in January that he was looking "forward to joining you at Augusta. . . ." Although Eisenhower had visited Augusta the weekend of January 29, he had not had time to invite Shivers on that trip (Shivers to Eisenhower, Jan. 28, 1955, and Eisenhower to Shivers, Feb. 2, 1955, both in AWF/N).

2 The President would visit Augusta from April 12 to April 19, but Shivers would not be among his guests.

3 Shivers's wife, the former Marialice Shary.
