Chapter 15: Searching "for an honorable peace"

Memorandum for the Secretary of Defense: Returning again to the subject of spreading defense procurement, I should like to have a very short and informal report as to what has been accomplished in the several Departments during the year.1 I am particularly interested in the automotive, mechanical and related fields. Specifically I should like to know the gross value of the contracts now in the hands of the two or three smaller automotive companies of which we are so deeply concerned.2

1 For background on the government's policy see nos. 614 and 1108.

2 Eisenhower was referring to the American Motors Corporation, Studebaker-Packard Corporation, and Kaiser Motors Corporation. "Due to changing requirements the production and procurement situation with the various producers changes," Wilson would answer. He told Eisenhower that procurement policy discussions had been held with the President of the Studebaker-Packard Corporation on March 9. Because the corporation was to be adversely affected by the phasing out of J-47 jet engine production, they had discussed alternative possibilities for government contracts (including subcontracting some J-57 jet engine parts production for Pratt & Whitney and Ford Motor Company) Wilson to Eisenhower, March 14, 1955, AWF/A; for developments see no. 1399.
