Chapter 15: Searching "for an honorable peace"

Dear Jack: Governor Adams has referred to me your note of March second.1

As far as prospective guests for stag dinners are concerned, although some have been submitted gratuitously, I have never asked anyone for suggestions. There are a few activities in this position that I decide according to my personal inclinations.2

Nevertheless, I will be glad to consider names you wish to submit. I must warn you that the list I have presently under contemplation is staggeringly long; there seems no possibility that I can ever include all the names submitted to me.3

With warm regard, Sincerely

1 Porter, Republican National Committeeman from Texas, had written Adams to suggest some names as future guests at White House stag dinners. This draft letter to Porter, which bears Eisenhower's handwritten changes, apparently was not used (Cross reference sheet, Porter, Mar. 2, 1955, WHCF/Alpha).

2 Eisenhower had added this sentence to the draft. Originally it had read, "There are a few activities in this position that I think I should reserve for expedience alone."

3 On March 10 Adams would write Porter that he would pass along his suggestions about dinner guests. The list was already so long, Adams would note, that it would not be possible to invite all of Porter's suggested names during 1955 (Cross reference sheet, Porter, Mar. 2, 1955, WHCF/Alpha).
