Chapter 15: Searching "for an honorable peace"

I understand that next week Prince Bernhard is having a meeting at Barbizon, continuing his exploration looking toward improving European and American relations.1

If personally you can fit such a trip into your schedule, I suggest you find the money (govt) and go to France.2

1 For background on the interest of Prince Bernhard of the Netherlands in this issue see no. 1169. Eisenhower had learned of the meeting (to be held on March 18-20) from former Under Secretary of State Walter Bedell Smith, who was co-chairman of the U.S. delegation (Smith to Eisenhower, Mar. 11, 1955, AWF/A; see also Telephone conversation, Eisenhower and Bernhard, Feb. 16, 1955, AWF/D; and Memorandum of Conversation, Eisenhower and Zellerbach, Mar. 15, 1955, AWF/AWD).

2 Since the European group would include "a number of really outstanding statesmen," Smith had told Eisenhower, his colleagues were "extremely anxious to have Gabe Hauge on the United States team . . ." (ibid.).

Hauge would attend the conference. His report to Eisenhower described it as dealing with the "competitive coexistence between Communism and the Free World as it relates to the uncommitted people." Hauge also gave Eisenhower an assessment of Communist strength in the countries represented and recommendations involving sports and cultural exchanges, economic assistance to Far Eastern countries, and a cultural conference between representatives of the East and West (Hauge, Memorandum for the President, Mar. 28, 1955, AWF/A; see also Slater to Adams, Mar. 11, 1955, AWF/A: Hauge Corr.). In thanking Hauge for his report, Eisenhower would write, "I hope you won't mind if I both plagiarize and quote you" (Eisenhower to Hauge, Mar. 30, 1955, AWF/A).
