The Papers of Dwight David Eisenhower, Volume XVI - The Presidency: The Middle Way
Part VII: "Nothing could be worse than global war"; January 1955 to May 1955
Chapter 15: Searching "for an honorable peace"

Dear Cabot: We have already discussed your letter of March sixteenth. Since I saw you after the Cabinet meeting last week, I again inquired about Jim Farley. He was asked to become a member of the President's Commission on Veterans' Pensions but declined.1

Incidentally, he is coming to a stag dinner I am having Wednesday evening.2

With warm regard, As ever

1 Lodge had wanted Eisenhower to "confer some post of honor on James A. Farley" because such an action "could mean a lot politically" (Lodge to Eisenhower, Mar. 16, 1955, AWF/A). For background see no. 1289. Although Sherman Adams said he would "try again" to get Farley on the pension commission, Farley would not serve (Adams to Whitman, n.d., AWF/A, Lodge Corr.). On the veterans' pension commission see no. 1156.

2 Farley would attend Eisenhower's stag dinner of March 23.
