Chapter 16: Summitry at Geneva

Dear Barbara: I think if I had 48 Barbara Gundersons to keep me informed as to the "political situation" even some of the alien press might change its low opinion of my political acumen. As it is, I shall have to struggle along with whatever national assist you choose to give me from time to time.1

Of course I was delighted to know that you felt the last Women's Conference was the most successful you have attended. I quite agree that Bertha Adkins has done a magnificent job, and I think your own contribution to the "Citizens-Republican" team had no little effect on the unity that not only you, but others, have reported to me. Please keep up your enthusiasm and your interest.2

While I simply haven't the time to reply in detail to all the interesting sidelights you bring out in your letters, I know you will forgive me. And please keep me informed!

With warm regard to you and Mr. Gunderson,3 Sincerely

1 Gunderson, Republican National Committeewoman from South Dakota, had written to commend the President on his May 10 appearance before the Republican Women's National Conference, held at the Mayflower Hotel in Washington, D.C. (n.d., AWF/N). On the conference see New York Times, May 11, 1955; on Eisenhower's address see Public Papers of the Presidents: Eisenhower, 1955, pp. 480-86.

2 Gunderson had praised Bertha S. Adkins, assistant to the chairman of the Republican National Committee, for her role at the three-day conference.

3 Her husband, Robert W. Gunderson.
