Dear Ed: Please tell Justice Warren and your other associates on the John Marshall Commission that I will appear at either one or the other of the two ceremonies. I cannot possibly appear both August twenty-fourth and September twenty-third.1 I have no idea when I shall get out west this summer, and I certainly cannot come back twice for this particular project.2
It is perfectly true that I stated to the Commission when we were all at luncheon that I would rather do something that would help to bring the story to school children, but they apparently unanimously urged my coming to Philadelphia to meet with the American Bar Association. I think you had better determine by cable to Justice Warren just what one he prefers me to undertake. Actually, I think I would prefer to do the one in front of the school children, but I did promise to go to Philadelphia on August twenty-fourth, so if that is the one they want me to do, that is the engagement I will try to fulfill.3
As ever
