Dear Milton: Thanks for your note. I am delighted that you got editorial support about making the trip.1

Mamie tells me she is counting on you to attend the dinner for our Brazilian guest; I hope someone has told you what the uniform will be.2

Nelson submitted his resignation this morning, but I told him I wasn't ready to act on it at the moment.3 In the meantime, as you may know, Mrs. Hobby is quite anxious to get Nelson into her Department.4 I shall talk to you about these things when you come down. As ever

1 In his letter of April 17 (AWF/N) Milton had reported nationwide editorial support for his assignment to visit Latin America (see no. 89). "In all parts of the country it was top-head news. Editorials from the newspapers in conservative Kansas have been as favorable as those from California and New York." Milton further wrote that he had received offers of help from both private and public agencies. "I am just beginning to realize what tremendous importance a great many individuals and agencies are attaching to the trip," he told his brother. "This means I must do a good job. When I next see you, I want to get your help in having the State Department assign a couple of its best analysts and writers to the trip, so that upon my return I can give to you and the Secretary of State--and to the nation if you wish--a report of some significance." For subsequent developments see no. 159.

2 At the White House on Saturday evening, April 25, Eisenhower would host a black-tie dinner for the governor of the state of Rio de Janeiro.

3 See no. 155.

4 On May 28 Eisenhower would nominate Rockefeller to be Under Secretary of the newly created Department of Health, Education and Welfare (HEW). Oveta Culp Hobby, former head of the abolished Federal Security Agency, was now Secretary of HEW. For background on continuing government reorganization under the Eisenhower Administration see no. 64; see also New York Times, May 5, 1953.
