Dear Dick: Where are we now with respect to that physical business for the children?1 As ever

1 For background on the President's plans to encourage the participation of youth in sports as a means of curbing juvenile delinquency see nos. 1501 and 1503. Nixon would help organize a White House program on physical fitness, which would include arrangements for a two-day conference scheduled for September 27 and 28 in Denver. Eisenhower's heart attack on September 24, however, would temporarily halt this effort. The project would be revived in 1956 (see no. 1887; Cross reference sheet, Fitness of American Youth, July 28, 1955, WHCF/OF 156-A-6; Public Papers of the Presidents: Eisenhower, 1956, pp. 478-79; and Denver Rocky Mountain News, Sept. 18, 1955).
