Chapter 2: "A number of misunderstandings": Party and International Struggles

Dear Nelson: For the moment at least, I think it would be very unwise for me to accept the recommendation of the Committee that I dissolve it and discharge it from any future responsibility in connection with reorganization.1

I am quite ready for you to allow it to lie acquiescent for the moment, but I should like to have another long talk with you before I do anything so drastic as to "let you off the hook."2

Have a good week end. As ever

1 Rockefeller chaired the President's Advisory Committee on Government Organization (see no. 26). A day earlier, he had spent a half-hour with Eisenhower presenting the committee's twenty separate reports and nearly 150 recommendations "looking to improvement in Government organization as a basis for increased efficiency and economy throughout the Executive Branch." Although much work remained to be done, Rockefeller wrote (see the cover letter that he, Milton Eisenhower, and Arthur S. Flemming had signed), the Bureau of the Budget could carry the burden of implementing most of the long-range suggestions. Rockefeller had suggested abolishing the committee (Apr. 22, 1953, AWF/A).

2 See no. 150. For additional developments on the reorganization issue see no. 169.
