Part VIII: Toward "statesmanship of a high order"; June 1955 to November 1955
Chapter 16: Summitry at Geneva

Dear Howard: Whatever happened to those suggestions we had from Jim Murphy about county chairmen? Sincerely1

1 James L. Murphy, chairman of the Citizens-for-Eisenhower Congressional Committee, had sent Eisenhower his suggestions for rejuvenating the Republican Party, especially at the county chairmen level. For background see no. 1504; see also the preceding document for Eisenhower's growing concern that the Republican National Committee had missed opportunities to develop important working relationships with state and local workers.

Administrative Assistant Pyle, writing to the President in Denver, Colorado, on September 15, would explain that a complete memorandum on Murphy's suggestions was in preparation. The delay had been caused by vacation scheduling. He said that he would "report in full shortly" (AWF/A). There is, however, no further correspondence in EM regarding Murphy's proposals.
