Dear Paul: The other Paul visited me today, reminding me (not that you are ever completely out of my thoughts) that it has been a long time since I have heard from you. He tells me that you had a good bridge game last Friday night, and that he found you in excellent spirits. That is good news, which both Mamie and I are delighted to have.1
I am afraid that the details of the period since my personal misfortune of September twenty-fourth have been so widely reported in the newspapers that there is little I can add to the story. However, General Snyder seems reasonably satisfied with the results of his technical examinations, and personally I seem to be gaining strength each day. Mamie, of course, is happy that we are alone in the Gettysburg house, so that all in all things seem to be working out quite well.2
For the past week we have had a steady and very cold wind that has made it less agreeable than usual to walk outside. As of now this is not of great concern to me, because I can still bundle up warmly enough that I can get the exercise the doctors prescribe. But it does hurt the chipping and putting (which the doctors now permit) and as I go along a little further and they want me to start playing a little golf, I shall probably be longing for warmer climates. Otherwise the place is perfect, particularly in the matter of distance from Washington. It is far enough away to throw some obstacles in the way of an ordinary person who wants to visit me, but not so far that I cannot carry on necessary duties.
Give my love to Pearl, and of course, warm regard to yourself. By all means keep up the progress that the other Paul tells me you are now making.3 As ever
