The Papers of Dwight David Eisenhower, Volume XVI - The Presidency: The Middle Way
Part IX: "Concerning my political intentions"; December 1955 to April 1956
Chapter 18: On "an almost normal schedule"

Dear Bob: If you will remove the "old" people category, I'll admit that the socks are not only comfortable but luxurious. If the wind continues to be steady across the Gettysburg plains, I shall probably wear all nine pair at once.1

But on second thought, I shall have to think more seriously about that category. As I well know, you soon have a birthday anniversary, making you again a good year older than I am.2 (I shan't mention how elderly I feel at times).

I only wish Mamie and I could celebrate the affair with you and Nell. Have a fine time; know that I am more than grateful for your thought in sending the socks; and, as always, my very best. As ever

1 In the November 26 note that accompanied the gift, Woodruff had written that he had run "across something that is new . . . in the matter of a comfortable sock for old people like us to wear in the winter time" (AWF/N). Eisenhower had been convalescing at his Gettysburg farm since November 14 (see no. 1629).

2 Woodruff would be sixty-six years old on December 6; Eisenhower had celebrated his sixty-fifth birthday on October 14.
