Part IX: "Concerning my political intentions"; December 1955 to April 1956
Chapter 18: On "an almost normal schedule"

Dear Nelson: When I returned to my office yesterday morning, I found on my desk the round-up of world opinion on the aftermath of the Foreign Ministers Conference.1 As usual, it was interesting and enlightening. (Incidentally, I am delighted that these reports are to be continued through the cooperation of the State Department and the USIA.)

If there is a proper opportunity, won't you please convey to those who worked with you on the preparation of these reports, my appreciation of their efforts?2

I shall hope to see you soon; meantime, I hope you are enjoying a little leisure and relief from the merry-go-round that is Washington.

With warm personal regard, As ever

1 Eisenhower had been in Key West, Florida, since December 28. On the Foreign Ministers Conference held in Geneva (October 27-November 16, 1955) see no. 1623. Rockefeller had told Eisenhower that the predominant reactions were disappointment and the belief that "we're back where we were" before the summit meeting the preceding July. "However," Rockefeller wrote, "this is coupled with a belief that there is no threat of a general `hot war' within the next three or four years" (Rockefeller to Eisenhower, Dec. 30, 1955, AWF/A).

2 Rockefeller had reported that Lloyd Free, a public affairs specialist, and psychology professor Hadley Cantril had worked as consultants on the preparation of the report.
