The Papers of Dwight David Eisenhower, Volume XIV - The Presidency: The Middle Way
Part II: Settling into "the long pull"; May 1953 to August 1953
Chapter 3: "A time for continued vigilance"

Dear Herbert: Thanks for your note of the twenty-seventh.1 The possibilities of my future schedule are no more definite than when I wrote you previously; the life of an American President is a fairly complicated business. Merely to transport him around the country--in view of the legal responsibilities of the Treasury Department in his protection--is a matter of considerable complexity and expense. Any trip takes a great deal of planning.2

In spite of all this, I still believe that by July first I can give you a definite reply.3 As ever

1 For background on Swope's efforts to persuade Eisenhower to attend a ceremony honoring Bernard Baruch see no. 128. Swope's letter is in AWF/N.

2 See no. 196.

3 The President would attend (see no. 127).
