Dear Ed: Is Arthur Langlie a lawyer?1 As ever

1 For background on Eisenhower's earlier interest in Arthur Langlie (LL.B. University of Washington 1926), governor of Washington from 1941 until 1945, and since 1949, and Edgar's criticism of the President's appointment of Frederick G. Hamley to the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals see no. 1807. Edgar had written, "If I were going to select a general to lead an invasion, I would confer with some military man--and, undoubtedly, you--about the qualifications of anybody for such an assignment" (Mar. 26, AWF/N).

Edgar would reply in his letter of April 2, 1956, that Langlie had been a lawyer before becoming a professional politician (ibid.). Langlie had practiced law with the Seattle firm of Shank, Bait and Rode from 1926 until 1935. On the day after Hamley's nomination (May 23, 1956), Edgar would again voice his disapproval of Hamley's experience, writing: "If two years of practice qualifies a man for a judicial position, I think you had better select your next generals from the boys at West Point. Thank you for saving me the few bucks I was going to put in the Langlie campaign" (Edgar Eisenhower to Eisenhower, May 24, 1956, ibid.).
