Chapter 3: "A time for continued vigilance"

Dear Betty:1 I am a little puzzled as to what answer to give Mr. Starks about the Sadler print.2 I should, of course, be delighted to have it.

On the other hand, I am always embarrassed when I accept from people gifts to which they are obviously very much attached. Moreover, in my current position I have so little opportunity to enjoy things of this sort that it seems a pity to deprive the donor of the pleasure he has in them.

Out of all this, can you possibly formulate an answer for your friend?

Thanks for your encouraging words. I hope the trip continues to be enjoyable and restful.3

With warm regard, As ever

1 Retired Admiral Stark resided in Washington, D.C. For background on his relationship with Eisenhower see Eisenhower Papers, vols. I-XIII. A draft of this note, with Eisenhower's handwritten emendations, is in AWF/N: Samples.

2 Stark had written on May 4 that he possessed a Sadler print given to him by Edson F. Starks, who wished to give the mate to the President. It seemed that one of the subjects in the print looked "not unlike `Ike'" (AWF/Gettysburg). Eisenhower would accept the print at the White House (Eisenhower to Starks, Oct. 8, 1953, ibid.).

3 Stark had written while making a "short cruise" aboard the U.S.S. Mount Olympus.
