Part II: Settling into "the long pull"; May 1953 to August 1953
Chapter 3: "A time for continued vigilance"

Dear Al: I am delighted that the crowds in Tunis seemed so friendly. I had an uneasy feeling that they might try to use the occasion to stage a "protest."1

Don't let anything interfere with our June fourth date.2 By the way, did you tell me the exact hour of the day that you would be available for beginning the contest? I suggest a start at four o'clock if we can arrange it, to continue through the evening. As ever

1 Writing on May 10 (AWF/A) Gruenther had described ceremonies that he and Marshal Juin had attended marking the tenth anniversary of the Allied liberation of Tunis (New York Times, May 10, 1953). Nationalist agitation and terrorism had peaked recently when a Tunis city council vice-president had been assassinated in the street (State, Foreign Relations, 1952-1954, vol. XI, Africa and South Asia, pt. 1, pp. 863-64).

2 In his reply of May 21 (AWF/A) Gruenther would confirm these arrangements: "The date is Thursday, June 4th; the time is 4 p.m. The weapons are cards--plenty of them--played by DDE a la Time." This last remark is Gruenther's reference to a Time magazine article (May 11) lauding Eisenhower's skill as a bridge player.
