To Robert Bernerd Anderson
Series: EM, AWF, DDE Diaries Series

The Papers of Dwight David Eisenhower, Volume XIV - The Presidency: The Middle Way
Part II: Settling into "the long pull"; May 1953 to August 1953
Chapter 3: "A time for continued vigilance"

Memorandum to the Secretary of the Navy: Please read the last paragraph of the attached letter, and when you are through with it, do exactly as my brother advises--tear it up. I send it along to you merely because of the faint possibility that there might be some information in it that you have not yet considered; although this I doubt. I can only remark that it does seem to me there has been some poor press relations or salesmanship in that area.1

Please do not give me any answer on this--I have already accepted the decision that you communicated to me some time back.

1 For background see the preceding document. There is no copy of Edgar Eisenhower's letter to the President in EM; it was apparently destroyed as directed (correspondence, Martin M. Teasley, DDEL, to EP, Nov. 27, 1989). Further, there is no record of Anderson's personal involvement in the controversy regarding the Navy's plan to install an acoustic range on Carr Inlet in the Puget Sound area (Edward L. Beach to Robert B. Anderson, Feb. 5, 1953, WHCF/CF: Navy).
