Part X: Cracks in the Alliance; May 1956 to September 1956
Chapter 21: "Grave difficulties in the Suez crisis"

Dear Nelson: If I am elected and if the acceptance speech should be by any chance "the charter of the future" (and do you mind if I sometimes steal that phrase?), I am content.1 And if the next four years can make our hopes a reality, then any personal sacrifice is forgotten.

I shall need your help in the coming months--and I know that, as always, it is there for the asking.2

With warm regard, As ever

1 A former assistant to the President, Rockefeller had written (Aug. 25, 1956, AWF/A) to congratulate Eisenhower on his convention performance. Rockefeller used this phrase to describe the enunciation of beliefs and party goals set forth in Eisenhower's acceptance speech of August 23 (Public Papers of the Presidents: Eisenhower, 1956, pp. 702-15).

2 At this time Rockefeller was chairman of Rockefeller Center, Inc.; on his resignation from the President's staff see no. 1671.
