Dear Marcy: I am delighted that you approve of the appointment of Judge Brennan to the Supreme Court. Not only was I impressed with his qualifications for the job, but when I met him I was immediately taken with his warm personality and his genuine understanding of people and problems.1

With personal regard, As ever

1 For background on Remington Arms Company Chairman of the Board Marcellus Hartley Dodge see Galambos, Chief of Staff, no. 1640. Writing on October 2, Dodge said of Brennan: "He not only has the reputation among my friends of being a top jurist, but he has many other qualifications which make his appointment very important just at this time in nearby New York as well as in New Jersey." The White House had announced the nomination of William Joseph Brennan, Jr., a Catholic and a lifelong Democrat, as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court on September 29 (see New York Times, Sept. 30, 1956). For further background see no. 1334 and Eisenhower, Mandate for Change, p. 230.
