To Robert Alphonso Taft
Series: Taft Papers

The Papers of Dwight David Eisenhower, Volume XIV - The Presidency: The Middle Way
Part II: Settling into "the long pull"; May 1953 to August 1953
Chapter 3: "A time for continued vigilance"

Dear Bob: I'm sorry to learn that your hip has continued to be troublesome, and that you are in the hospital for a few days.1 I hope the treatment will completely eliminate the difficulty, and that you will be back in circulation shortly. We need to have you around.2

With best wishes, Sincerely

1 Taft had first complained of pain in his hip in April, after a round of golf with Eisenhower at Augusta. Taft had checked into Walter Reed Hospital on May 20. For developments see no. 222.

2 Even after the diagnosis of his malignancy in late May, Taft, now on crutches, would appear sporadically on Capitol Hill. He would, however, soon relinquish floor leadership to Senator William Knowland (see nos. 188 and 222).
