Chapter 22: On Suez "we do not see eye to eye"

Dear Frank: It just struck me that it has been a long time since I have had direct word from you--or about your health and doings. I hope everything goes splendidly with you.1

As you may know, I was counting on being in Texas today, but due to the tense situation in the Mid East I found it necessary to cancel the trip.2 Since my scheduled meeting was at the Dallas Airport, I was hopeful of seeing most of my Texas friends as I thought it would be rather easy for most of them to concentrate on that place.

In any event, best of wishes and warm regard to you and yours.

As ever

1 In his response, which would be initialed by the President, Wood would mention that he had talked with "hundreds of women" in Texas and that all were going to vote for Eisenhower (Nov. 1, 1956, AWF/N). For developments see no. 2081.

2 Eisenhower later noted that "October 20, 1956 was the start of the most crowded and demanding three weeks of my entire Presidency" (Eisenhower, Waging Peace, p. 58). He also wrote Leonard Finder that "in view of the grave crisis now confronting me, I doubt if I shall do much, if any, more of the ordinary type of campaigning" (Oct. 31, AWF/N; see also no. 2063).
