Part II: Settling into "the long pull"; May 1953 to August 1953
Chapter 3: "A time for continued vigilance"

Dear Arthur: Thank you very much for sending me the reports of the three Columbia University projects. I read them--with great interest--over the weekend.1

Phil Young tells me he is going to Pittsburgh tomorrow in behalf of the Assembly.2

With best wishes, Sincerely

P.S. Please give Iphigene my congratulations on the award recently presented to her by the Superintendent of Schools!3

1 Eisenhower and Sulzberger had met at the White House on May 5 in an off-the-record session; at that time Eisenhower had inquired about the status of three of his favorite Columbia University projects--the American Assembly, the Citizen Education Project, and the Institute for War and Peace Studies. To the drafter of this reply to Sulzberger, Eisenhower had noted at the bottom of Sulzberger's cover letter (May 21, AWF/N), "Nice note of thanks. Read them over the weekend."

The reports were: "The American Assembly: Recent Developments and Present Plans" (for background see no. 34); "Citizen Education: Present Status" (see Eisenhower Papers, vols. X-XIII); and "The Institute of War and Peace Studies in 1952-53" (see no. 34).

2 Young had served as Executive Director of the American Assembly before being named Chairman of the U.S. Civil Service Commission (see no. 34). In an appeal for funds he would join other Assembly officials at a luncheon for Pittsburgh area leaders.

3 Sulzberger's wife, the former Iphigene Ochs, had received an award for establishing a program of cooperation between the New York Times and New York City's public schools (New York Times, May 21, 1953; for further background on Mrs. Sulzberger see Galambos, NATO and the Campaign of 1952).
