Part XI: The free world's "sad mess"; October 1956 to January 1957
Chapter 23: What is needed is "a calming influence"

Dear Harry: Jim Hagerty just showed me a copy of the special pictorial report on "Hungary's Fight for Freedom." It seems to me that it should be very effective in helping Americans understand exactly what price people place upon the freedom of which they have been robbed.1

Because of this I should like to send copies to a few of my friends. Jim tells me the price is 50ยข--I am enclosing a check for $10 and if you will send me twenty copies I will mail them out.2

With warm regard, As ever

1 Eisenhower was referring to an article, "A Desperate Fight for Freedom," in the November 5, 1956 Life. For background on the Hungarian revolution see nos. 2044, 2055, and 2067.

2 Luce would reply on December 8, saying that "It meant a whole lot to the people here who put out the Hungary book to get the message from you via Jim Hagerty. It was a labor of love--the love of freedom" (AWF/A).
