Chapter 23: What is needed is "a calming influence"

Dear Ed and Kay: For a long time I have wanted to write a joint note to the two of you in an attempt to express my appreciation of your efforts in connection with the refurbishing of the Eisenhower home in Abilene.1

I realize that you contributed largely to the project and that you--especially Kay--spent a lot of time supervising the actual work.2 Of course I am eager personally to see the result, but meantime Milton and Earl have told me what a fine job it is, and how pleased they are.3 I assure you that I am more than grateful to you for your interest and assistance in a matter that is very close to my heart.

With affectionate regard--and many thanks, Sincerely

1 On December 3 Milton Eisenhower had written that the Berminghams had contributed money "to finance the refurbishing of the Eisenhower" boyhood home (AWF/N, Bermingham Corr.; see also Eisenhower to Dillon, Dec. 7, 1956, ibid.). On the house, located at the Eisenhower Center and open to the public since June 1947, see Galambos, The Chief of Staff, no. 1602; and Eisenhower Papers, vols. X-XIII.

2 Milton had reported that Mrs. Bermingham had been one of five women who supervised the plans and work.

3 Milton and Earl Eisenhower had attended the dedication and the unveiling ceremonies on November 24 (see New York Times, Nov. 25, 1956).
