Chapter 23: What is needed is "a calming influence"

Dear Lucy: Recently I have had no word from you about Ed's condition and so I have been assuming that he was improving.1 This morning I feel even more sure of this possibility for the reason that I had a short note from Edgar and he said nothing at all about his health.2 Nevertheless, I should very much like to know whether he feels that he is really recovered. So one of these days when you get a chance, I would be deeply grateful if you would write to me about it.3

Please tell Edgar that so far as I know there have been no recommendations received here concerning the man in whom he was interested. However, I will make sure that if his name ever comes up to me, Ed's recommendation will be brought again to my attention.

With affectionate regard, As ever

1 For background see no. 2092.

2 Edgar had written on January 4 to recommend a man who he thought was being considered for an appointment as ambassador to Mexico (AWF/N).

3 On January 10 Lucy Eisenhower would apologize for failing to report on Edgar's health (AWF/N). "Ed has progressed tremendously in the last two weeks," she wrote, "and I assumed he was in touch with you. . . ." For developments see no. 2169.
