Chapter 4: Striving for Unity

Dear Bob: Yesterday I had a group of people for luncheon who have become prominent in various branches of sport. One of them was named Andy Anderson, who tells me that he is a good friend of yours.1 After luncheon he and I talked a bit about fishing, and he told me that he was going to send me a line that would be especially adapted to a one and a half ounce rod I have. The little rod is fun to use, but Ambercrombie and Fitch did not fit the right kind of line to it, in my opinion. Anyhow, Andy Anderson asked me to convey to you his greetings and best wishes.

Writing this note gives me a chance, also, to thank you for your kindness in commenting on our broadcast effort the other evening.2 I agree with you that it would be desirable to let our people know more about the "fiscal mess."

With all the best, Sincerely

1 Andrew Anderson was an angler (see the Chronology).

2 Jones, a prominent golf professional, had written on June 4 commending Eisenhower on his June 3 television appearance with four Cabinet members in a panel discussion on national defense and economic security matters (AWF/N; for background see no. 197). Jones had suggested that the Administration's fiscal problems be the subject of another such program.
