Part I: Charting a New Course; January 1953 to April 1953
Chapter 1: Developing a spirit of teamwork

When Wright Bryan and the other members of the Newspaper Editors Society were here this morning, I promised them that I would make a talk at the Editors' meeting which will take place in Washington between April 16th and 18th.1 They prefer that I would come to dinner on the night of the 18th (with Mrs. Eisenhower) but are quite content if I attend a luncheon on the 16th, 17th or 18th.

Please tell Emmet Hughes about this right away, and inform him that I would not want to make more than a twenty minute talk at the outset.2

Also make certain that Mrs. Eisenhower's secretary has this information.

I promised to give them a firm answer within a week or ten days.3

1 At 9:00 a.m. Eisenhower had met with Wright Bryan of the Atlanta Journal, Walker Stone of the Scripps-Howard chain, Ben McKelway of the Washington Star, Russell Wiggins of the Washington Post, and David Lawrence of U.S. News & World Report, all members of the American Society of Newspaper Editors. Stone had requested the meeting through James C. Hagerty, White House press secretary (see no. 16); Oveta Culp Hobby (see no. 2), an active member of the society, also attended.

2 For background on Hughes see no. 16.

3 The President would address the society at 1:00 p.m. on April 16 (see no. 132).
