Chapter 4: Striving for Unity

Herewith the record of a former Admiral of the Navy, who, I understand, would like to enter public service.1 It is entirely possible that he is exactly the kind of man we want, and I note that he is not yet fifty-three years old.

For some reason he is interested in an Ambassadorship in one of the South American countries, but I assume would accept a responsible post in other fields.2

Since we are always on the lookout for competent men, I sent this to you for your records.3

1 Rear Admiral Arthur Ainslee Ageton (USN, ret.) had been working as an author and journalist since retirement in 1947. His chief publications dealt with military subjects, especially modern methods of navigation. Of his several books, one, entitled Sailor's Farewell, had been accepted as his Master's thesis by the Johns Hopkins University (see Baltimore Sun, June 12, 1953). Retired Major General Robert M. Littlejohn (see Galambos, NATO and the Campaign of 1952, no. 735) had called Ageton to Eisenhower's attention in a letter of June 23 (WHCF/OF 8-F). Eisenhower sent a copy of this note to the State Department.

2 Ageton had planned to sail on June 12 for Peru, where he would write about traveling and political science (Baltimore Sun, June 12, 1953). On July 9 Secretary of State Dulles would tell Adams that he preferred to keep Ageton's name in mind for a special mission rather than an ambassadorship (WHCF/OF 8-F). Nevertheless, Ageton would become U.S. Ambassador to Paraguay in 1954 (Dulles to Eisenhower, July 16, 1954, ibid.; see also New York Times, July 24, 1954).

3 This is one of a series of requests from Eisenhower to Adams concerning appointees (see, e.g., nos. 237 and 1015).
