Chapter 4: Striving for Unity

Dear Johnnie: Your letter just came in that tells me about your efforts to get in a little golf practice.1 I have immediately gathered up for dispatch by the air forces a whole bunch of appliances that are designed to help you practice golf in a limited space.

For example, there are a dozen hollow plastic balls. You are supposed to be able to hit these as hard as you want and they will go only a few yards. There are others that are spiked down to the ground by ropes--and, in fact, too many kinds to describe.2

In addition, I am sending a dozen good balls and a number five iron. I hope you have some fun with them. All of us here are fine. Mamie and I send love. As ever

1 John Eisenhower's letter is not in EM.

2 Eisenhower had previously shared his enthusiasm for golf by giving his son the latest in golf gadgetry (see, e.g., no. 158).
