Chapter 5: "So much to do in the world"

Dear Ed: As the time draws near, it looks more and more to me as if I shall have to give up my intention to come out to the Governors Conference. Of course, a miracle could still occur, but the prospects are very dim at the moment.1

As to writing 25 words on "Why I Play Golf," you gave me a fine draft of a statement--except that a quick look makes me believe that you have used about 150 words instead of 25!2 (Possibly that's the lawyer in it.)

I am delighted that you can go to Bohemian Grove. I made one visit to that encampment and found it to be a more than enjoyable experience.3 Incidentally, right outside the gate is a nice little nine-hole golf course which you can play every morning while a lot of people have nothing to do but sleep off a big head!

With all the best, As ever

1 On July 23 Edgar had written mentioning a rumor that the President would attend the Governors' Conference in Seattle, Washington. "If you come," he wrote, "we would be delighted to have you and Mamie stay with us, if you can stand the simple little country life that we are living" (AWF/N).

Attached to this reply is an undated, unsigned, typewritten note: "You said to remind you today about writing your brother Edgar that you definitely (?) would not be going to Seattle." As it turned out, Eisenhower would fly to Seattle the afternoon of August 3, attend the conference on August 4, and return to the White House early the next day (see the President's daily appointments, and New York Times, Aug. 2, 4, 5, 9, 1953).

2 Edgar had written on behalf of the Washington State Seniors Golf Association. The organization hoped to include a twenty-five-word statement by the President in its members' annual book (AWF/N).

3 Eisenhower had visited the encampment in July 1950. For background see Galambos, Columbia University, nos. 388 and 769.
