Chapter 5: "So much to do in the world"

Dear Arthur: I think you learned your lesson very cheaply.1 Of course, a number of reporters tried to reach me to find out whether you were my "spokesman."

After reading your letter, I find that I had a rather accurate picture of what actually happened to you. I figured that you had been trapped into a conversation which later turned out to be an interview.

I should merely say--don't worry about it--and don't repeat!2

Give my love to Louise. Devotedly

1 At a July 23 luncheon given by the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce, Arthur talked with a reporter from the Las Vegas Sun, who quoted him as saying that McCarthy was the "most dangerous menace to America" (Las Vegas Sun, July 24, 25, 1953; New York Times, July 26, 1953). On July 27 McCarthy wrote Arthur asking if he had been quoted correctly in the Sun (AWF/N). Arthur then drafted a reply and sent it to Presidential Aide Thomas E. Stephens, explaining that he had been unaware of the reporter's anti-McCarthy sentiments when he had spoken so freely with him (A. Eisenhower to Stephens, AWF/N). Arthur also wrote to his brother on the same day assuring him that he was "giving no interviews of any kind," since he "did not realize what it meant to talk frankly with what [he] thought was a friendly reporter" (ibid.).
