The Papers of Dwight David Eisenhower, Volume XIV - The Presidency: The Middle Way
Part I: Charting a New Course; January 1953 to April 1953
Chapter 1: Developing a spirit of teamwork

Dear Mr. Johnson: My son sent your letter on to me because he was intrigued by your suggestion.1

Actually, consideration of your suggestion is simply not possible. An old injury to the shoulder of my throwing arm makes it impossible for me to throw a baseball at all anymore; and, at my age, I could scarcely be able to learn to throw with the other arm.

I do sincerely thank you for the enthusiasm of your letter.

With best wishes, Sincerely

1 In his longhand letter (Jan. 22, 1953 to John S. D. Eisenhower, AWF/M: OF, John Eisenhower Corr.) Johnson had said that "many millions of us . . . are brimming over with a new confidence since your father's election." Johnson asked: "Do you think the President would agree to really throw out the first ball on opening day? Right out there on the mound!" For Eisenhower's opening-day schedule see no. 37.
