Chapter 6: Building strength when there is "no perfect answer"

Dear Ed: I share your high opinion of Barry Goldwater--in fact, I am counting heavily upon him for the future.1

As to his services as an interpreter when I meet President Cortines, you are raising the whole question of protocol and procedure--all so dear to the hearts of the diplomats. I shall nevertheless mention the matter to Foster Dulles to see whether it is feasible to do such a thing.

Thank you very much for your suggestion.2 As ever

1 In a letter of September 27 (AWF/N) Bermingham had suggested that Arizona's Senator Barry Goldwater serve as Eisenhower's interpreter when he met with Mexican President Ruiz Cortines at the Falcon Dam dedication on October 19 (see no. 214). Goldwater, said Bermingham, spoke Spanish fluently and was admired by the Mexican people. Bermingham also enclosed a letter from Mexican business leader Antonio Bermudez, who was interested in selling natural gas (see no. 285).

2 Eisenhower told Dulles of Bermingham's suggestion in a note of October 2 (AWF/D-H). There is no reply from Dulles in AWF, and Goldwater would not interpret for Eisenhower at the dedication (see Blanchard to Belton, Oct. 24, 1953, AWF/D; New York Times, Oct. 20, 1953).
